IMO 2020 Sulphur Regulations
Our road to a greener future ! !
2019-05-16 IMO-proof 7star 600x600
We are taking steps to comply with upcoming regulations concerning the reduction of sulphur emissions from ships. As you may be aware, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will adopt on January 1, 2020 a worldwide cap on the sulphur content of ship's exhaust gasses. All sea going vessels must comply with the 2020 regulations. We want to explain what we will do to comply, what we stand for as a company, and how you as our client and us as a shipping company will be affected.
Sevenstar Yacht Transport is part of the Spliethoff Group, a global ocean transport company that owns a fleet of more than 120 vessels serving clients worldwide. We are committed not only to health, safety and quality excellence but also to improving our environmental performance. Moving towards a sustainable future by minimising our environmental footprint is a focal point for us. The reduction of emissions is fundamental in this regard.
2020 compliant
To achieve compliance with the 2020 sulphur regulations, two options are available to us. One is the use of low-sulphur content fuels. The other is the installation of exhaust gas cleaning systems, also known as scrubbers. At present, 75% of our fleet is already equipped with scrubbers. Our objective is to equip all vessels with scrubbers by the end of 2020. We opted for scrubbers as this proven technology not only removes sulphur, but also significantly reduces the amounts of black carbon and particulate matter in exhaust gasses. As confirmed by independent studies, the wash water emitted by scrubbers is harmless to the environment. We believe that the installation of scrubbers is the safest and most cost-effective way to protect the environment. During 2020, ships awaiting installation of scrubbers will sail on low-sulphur fuel. In coastal waters where even more stringent environmental standards apply, our ships will comply too.
What does this mean for you?
Both the adoption of scrubbers and the use of low-sulphur fuel will increase fleet operating costs. From October 1, 2019 onwards we will implement a transition period to achieve compliance by January 1, 2020. Hence, new prices will apply as of October 1, 2019. As before, you may be confident that we will do our utmost to find the best solution to serve your needs in a cost-effective manner that also reduces our fleet's environmental footprint.
